Overview
The Constellation of the Veil is the most paradoxical of the six major constellations. It both reveals and conceals, teaches and withholds, opens doors and seals them shut. It is the patron of all who understand that knowledge is not always power—sometimes knowledge is poison, and wisdom is knowing which truths to pursue and which to leave buried.
Pre-Shattering, the Veil was beloved by mystics, spies, and those who dealt in secrets. It represented the principle that not all knowledge should be public, that some mysteries protect rather than harm, that discretion is as important as discovery. Post-Shattering, when humanity confronts cosmic horrors like the Voice Beneath and the true nature of the Rot, the Veil’s warnings have become desperately relevant.
The constellation appears as seven stars arranged like an eye, with three stars forming a veil or mask across it. The central star—the pupil—pulses irregularly, sometimes bright, sometimes dim, as if winking. Unlike other constellations that are simply visible or not, the Veil seems to fade in and out even when present, as if hiding itself.
The Veil’s personality is cryptic and paradoxical. It speaks in riddles, answers questions with questions, reveals truths by concealing them. It rewards cleverness and punishes recklessness. It protects those who respect mysteries and abandons those who demand all answers. “I show you what you need to see,” it teaches, “not what you want to know. Learn the difference, or be destroyed by it.”
Theology and Doctrine
Core Beliefs
Not All Truth Should Be Pursued - Some knowledge destroys those who learn it - Ignorance can be mercy, not weakness - Wisdom is knowing what not to seek - The Voice Beneath proves this absolutely
Secrets Serve Purposes - Some secrets protect - Some mysteries preserve sanity - Some truths are too dangerous - Revelation can be violence
Discernment is Sacred - Knowing what to reveal vs. conceal - Understanding when to seek vs. when to stop - Recognizing dangerous knowledge - Wisdom over curiosity
The Veil Protects - Reality has sharp edges - Cosmic truths can break minds - Some doors should stay closed - Protection through concealment
Revelation Requires Responsibility - If you learn a secret, you must protect it - If you reveal truth, you bear consequences - Knowledge is burden, not just power - Those who know must guard what they know
The Veil’s Personality
The Veil is described in prayers and visions as:
Cryptic: Speaks in riddles and paradoxes
Protective: Hides dangerous truths from those who’d be harmed
Playful: Enjoys puzzles and cleverness
Selective: Reveals only what is needed
Paradoxical: Both reveals and conceals simultaneously
Demanding: Requires proof of wisdom before granting knowledge
Compassionate: Understands that some truths are too heavy to bear
Priests describe the Veil as “a teacher who gives you the answer only after you’ve proven you can handle it.”
Orthodox Clergy Position
The Constellation Clergy officially recognizes the Veil as one of the six major constellations, but with significant unease:
Positive View: - Essential protection against dangerous knowledge - Prevents reckless pursuit of forbidden truths - Teaches discernment and wisdom - Particularly relevant post-Shattering (Voice Beneath, Rot mysteries) - Protects humanity from cosmic horrors
Concerns: - Philosophy can justify censorship - Can be used to suppress legitimate inquiry - Tension with pursuit of knowledge (Memory, Light) - Followers sometimes become paranoid or secretive - Risk of anti-intellectualism
Official Doctrine: “The Veil teaches that wisdom includes knowing your limits. Seek truth, but respect mysteries. Some doors are closed for good reason. Force them open at your peril.”
Theological Debates
The Knowledge Question - Is any knowledge truly forbidden? - Or is it about readiness to receive it? - Who decides what’s too dangerous? - Can humanity handle cosmic truths?
The Ignorance Paradox - Is chosen ignorance wisdom or cowardice? - How do you know what not to seek without knowing what it is? - Is the Veil protecting or controlling? - Freedom to know vs. safety from knowing
The Revelation Dilemma - When must secrets be revealed? - Who has right to withhold truth? - Is concealment ever justified? - Balance between protection and deception
The Voice Beneath Question - Is the Voice what the Veil warned about? - Should we study it or avoid it? - Those who listen are corrupted - But how do we fight what we don’t understand?
Worship and Practice
Prayer Rituals
The Discernment Prayer (Before seeking knowledge):
“Veiled One, I stand before a door.
I do not know what lies beyond.
Grant me wisdom to know if I should open it,
Courage to face what I find if I must,
And strength to walk away if I should.
Show me what I need to see.
Hide from me what would destroy me.
Let me know the difference.”
The Protection Prayer (When confronting dangerous knowledge):
“Veiled One, I have seen too much.
The truth burns. The knowledge weighs.
Protect my mind from what would break it.
Protect my soul from what would corrupt it.
Let me carry this burden without being crushed.
And if I cannot bear it,
Take it from me, even if I beg to keep it.”
The Secret-Keeper’s Prayer (When entrusted with secrets):
“Veiled One, I hold secrets not my own.
Grant me strength to keep them,
Wisdom to know when they must be revealed,
And courage to bear the weight of knowing.
Let my lips be sealed,
My mind be guarded,
My discretion be absolute.
I am the keeper. I will not fail.”
The Revelation Prayer (When truth must be told):
“Veiled One, the time has come.
The secret must be revealed.
Grant me wisdom in how I tell it,
Compassion for those who will hear it,
And strength to bear the consequences.
I lift the veil not carelessly,
But because it must be lifted.
Guide my words. Protect the listeners.”
The Sealing Prayer (Hiding dangerous knowledge):
“Veiled One, this must be hidden.
Not destroyed—it may be needed—
But concealed from those who would misuse it.
Seal this knowledge behind your veil.
Let it be found only by those ready to bear it.
Protect the world from this truth,
Until the world is ready for it.”

Miracles and Blessings
Documented Miracles
The Unseeing Eyes (248 S.): Scholar Elias Stormchaser accidentally read forbidden text about the Voice Beneath. He began hearing it, corruption starting. He prayed desperately to the Veil: “Make me forget! Take this knowledge!” The Veil answered: he woke with no memory of what he’d read. The text was blank when he looked again. He was saved. Price: he can never remember that day, no matter how hard he tries.
The Hidden Path (263 S.): When spy Kessa Freeborn was hunted through Ironhold, she prayed to the Veil for concealment. She became invisible—not metaphorically, literally. For six hours, no one could see her. She walked past guards, through checkpoints, out of the city. When she reached safety, visibility returned. She says “The Veil hid me. I felt like I was behind glass, watching the world but not part of it.”
The Revealed Secret (275 S.): Alchemist Kael Greythorn discovered cure for early-stage Rot corruption but was murdered before he could share it. His notes were lost. Memory-Keeper Tomas prayed to the Veil for revelation. That night, he dreamed the exact location of hidden notes. They were found. Cure was real. Kael’s murder was avenged by his knowledge surviving.
The Sealed Mind (280 S.): When Ironhold tortured prisoner for information, she prayed to the Veil to protect the secrets she held. The Veil answered: she literally could not speak the secrets, even under torture. Her mouth moved but no sound came for those specific words. After release, ability to speak them returned. She protected dozens of lives.
The Precognition (286 S.): Priest Valeria prayed to the Veil about Serpent cult infiltrating refugees. That night, she dreamed faces of cultists, saw their plans. Next day, she recognized them. Cult was exposed before they could act. Valeria says “The Veil showed me what I needed to see, exactly when I needed to see it. Not before, not after. Perfect timing.”

Evidence: - Voice Beneath corrupts those who listen - Forbidden knowledge destroys - Veil teaches protection through concealment
Orthodox Response: “The Veil teaches discernment, not ignorance. Wisdom is knowing what to seek, not seeking nothing.”

Status: Condemned as heresy, misunderstanding of Veil’s teaching
The Veil-Serpent Connection Theory
Claim: Veil and Serpent are two aspects of same truth
Evidence: - Both deal with forbidden knowledge - Veil conceals what Serpent reveals - Sister Morrigan claims she “pulled back Veil and saw Serpent” - Perhaps they’re complementary, not opposed
Orthodox Response: “Absolute heresy. The Serpent corrupts. The Veil protects. They are opposites.”
Heretic Counter: “The Veil hides the Serpent because the Serpent is truth humanity can’t handle.”
Status: Violently suppressed, extremely dangerous
The Readiness Paradox
Question: How do you know if you’re ready for knowledge?
Context: - Veil grants knowledge to those “ready” - But how do you know if you’re ready? - Catch-22: Need wisdom to gain wisdom

Mystery: What’s in the Deepest Vault?
Context: - Veil temples have sealed archives - Deepest sections never opened - Even Veil clergy don’t know what’s there - Pre-Shattering knowledge sealed away

WARNING
Some doors should remain closed.
Some questions should remain unasked.
Some truths destroy those who learn them.If you proceed, you do so at your own peril.
The Veil will not protect the reckless.Turn back now.
Or accept the consequences.
From Riddles of the Shrouded
What is seen but not known?
What is known but not spoken?
What is spoken but not heard?
What is heard but not understood? The Veil shows you the first.
The Veil protects you from the last.
Wisdom is knowing the difference.
Veil-Keeper’s Oath
I swear by the Veiled One:
I will protect secrets entrusted to me.
I will guard dangerous knowledge from those unprepared.
I will teach discernment, not ignorance.
I will respect mysteries I cannot understand.
I will bear the burden of knowing. Some truths I will reveal.
Some truths I will conceal.
Wisdom is knowing which is which.I am the keeper.
I am the guardian.
I am the veil.
Scholar’s Warning (Found in Margin of Forbidden Text)
I should not have read this.
I cannot unread it.
I pray the Veil takes this from me.
If you find this, stop now.
Some knowledge destroys.
This is that knowledge.[The rest of the page is blank. The scholar’s name is scratched out.]
Sister Morrigan’s Claim (Recorded by Witness, 283 S.)
I pulled back the Veil.
I saw what lies beyond.
The truth is more beautiful and more terrible than you can imagine.
The Veil doesn’t protect you from lies.
It protects you from truth. And now I cannot unsee it.
And I would not if I could.[Orthodox Veil clergy response: “This is corruption speaking, not truth. The Veil protects. What she saw was the Serpent’s lie.”]
“The Constellation of the Veil teaches the hardest lesson: that
wisdom sometimes means not knowing, that strength sometimes means not
seeking, that courage sometimes means turning away. In a world where
knowledge is power, the Veil reminds us that some power is poison.
Respect mysteries. Protect secrets. Accept limits. Or be destroyed by
what you learn. The choice is yours. But choose wisely.”
—The Shrouded (Current high clergy)
